Русское сочетание быть виноватым соответствует в английском языке разным частям речи: существительному fault — в сочетании to be at fault и глаголу to blame — в конструкции с модальным глаголом to be — to be to blame1. guilty — ( прилагательное многозначно и соответствует двум русским прилагательным): a) виноватый, виноват, пристыженный: one's guilty conscience — чья-то нечистая совесть; to look guilty — выглядеть виноватым/иметь виноватый вид; (to feel guilty — стыдиться/чувствовать себя виноватым My guilty conscience took the better of me and I went back lo apologize. — Совесть меня так замучила, что я вернулся, чтобы извиниться. b) виновный ( в преступлении): to find smb guilty — считать кого-либо виновным; to plead guilty — признавать себя виновным The jury found him guilty of robbery and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment. — Суд признал его виновным в грабеже и приговорил к пяти годам тюрьмы. The judge didn't find him guilty for lack of evidence. — Судья не признал его виновным из-за недостатка улик. Значение прилагательного guilty вызывает представление о запятнанности в поступках, в отношениях, в репутации. Этот же компонент присутствует в нижеприведенных сочетаниях: That was a very dirty trick. — Это был грязный поступок. I don't want to know about your dirty activities. — Я ничего не желаю знать о ваших грязных делах. Those with blood on their hands must be punished. — Те, у кого руки в крови, должны понести наказание. It is another stain on his character. — Это еще одно грязное пятно на его репутации. Возможность отмывания от запятнанности передаётся словами clean, spotless, to wash: He made a clean breast of it. — Он в этом чистосердечно признался. Не had a spotless reputation. — Его репутация ничем не запятнана. They washed their hands of the whole business. — Они отказались от участия в этом деле.2. to be at fault — быть виноватым ( используется главным образом в ситуациях обыденной жизни): I wonder who is at fault that dinner is not yet ready? — Интересно, кто пинопат в том, что обед до сих пор не готов? I don't see why I should go and apologize if it is not my fault. — He понимаю, почему я должен извиняться, если я не виноват.3. to be to blame — быть виноватым: to be to blame for smth, for doing smth — быть виноватым в чем-либо/ быть виноватым в каких-либо деяниях I know you are not to blame, but I'm sure you know who is responsible/ whose fault it is. — Я знаю, что вы не виноваты, но я уверен, вы знаете, чья это вина./Я знаю, что не вас следует обвинять, но я уверен, вы знаете, кто виноват. Who is to blame for all the mess? — Кто виноват во всем этом беспорядке? When things go wrong here you never know who is actually to blame for it.— Когда дела идут не так, никогда не знаешь, кто действительно в этом виноват./Когда дела идут не так, никогда не знаешь, кто конкретно в этом виноват.
